Haworthiopsis Fasciata "Zebra Plant", generally known as Haworthia fasciata, is a small succulent plant that grows up to 5 inches (13 cm) tall and 8" (20 cm) wide. Its leaves are triangular-shaped. They are green with narrow and crested white strips on their outside. Every leaf has a non-acute spine at its end.

In the summer months, white flowers appear at the end of a long inflorescence. The Haworthia fasciata is similar to Haworthiopsis attenuata species. Therefore, these are frequently confused with each other.

The H. fasciata has smoother inner leaves and has fatty leaves. While the H. attenuata displays tubercles (warty growths).

This is a rare succulent. Most plants that are labeled as H. fasciata are H. attenuata. Because of the similar markings.

How to Care for Haworthia fasciata 'Zebra Plant'

"Zebra Plant" is a common houseplant. It does well indoors in a container. So it is best suited for beginners. The propagation is also very easy.

It actively grows from Spring to Fall. So do care a little extra in these seasons. You should also fertilize if possible, especially if growing in a container. It is dormant in Summer Months. So only water enough to keep it alive, otherwise, it won't need any moisture.

Soil Need for Haworthia fasciata "Zebra Plant" Plant

The plant naturally grows in South Africa where the porous soil gives them well drainage with enough sunlight. So you'll also need the same type of well drainage soil for it to grow well.

I've written an in-depth guide on preparing your perfect DIY succulent soil for containers.

If you want to go to a pre-mixed solution, you should check my comparison post about the best succulents and cacti soil in the market.

Watering Zebra Plant

Haworthia fasciata "Zebra Plant" requires the typical succulent watering schedule. It is best to water once the soil is totally dry. Otherwise, its roots may rot in wet soil. You can check the soil by putting your finger into the soil about 2.5 inches deep. OR typically water after 4 to 7 days, depending on your environmental conditions.

I've mentioned it all in the "How often to water succulents and cacti" guide.

It is a summer dormant plant and does require much water in this season, except in excessively hot and dry conditions.

Fertilizing Zebra Plant

In the active growing seasons, i.e. in the Spring and Fall, fertilize it slightly with a succulent fertilizer in a month. As it dormant in the Summer months, so hold off on fertilizing in those months.

Known Diseases

Generally "Zebra Plant" is a "disease-free" succulent. But if you overwater it, then it may attract the mealybugs, and its roots may rot as well. So try to never overwater.

Mealybugs appear on the surface of the plant leaves as tiny, soft-bodied insects surrounded by a fuzzy, white powdery mess, that'll have a cotton-like look.

Is it Poisonous?

The Aeonium "Blushing Beauty" is non-poisonous and is considered a safe succulent plant.

Where should you plant it?

If you live in a colder environment, where temperature can go below 30 °F (-1.1 °C), You should plant it in a pot (better with a drainage hole). Because it is not cold hardy and you'll be able to bring it inside.

In their natural habitat, it receives plenty of sunlight, but less water. So you'll need to keep it in a brighter area where it gets about 4 to 6 hours of sunlight.

How to Propagate Haworthia fasciata "Zebra Plant"

"Zebra Plant" can be propagated easily by offset.

Propagate by offset

"Zebra Plant" produces small offsets. To propagate pull an offset from the base of the plant, allow it to callous over for some days, then place it in well-draining soil. Give water when the soil is completely dried out.
